Theatre pedagogy is a specialist study, so the structure of its programme is based on theory, which is regularly supplemented by practical activities, while practical activities are regularly updated according to the relevant theory. This kind of regular intertwining of theory and practice enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for theatrical and pedagogical work. As personal experience of participation in theatre activities is crucial for developing understanding and the necessary skills, students take part in workshops run within several courses, which is why the number of active lessons is quite large. The structure of the programme enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for implementation of theatrical skills in various contexts: in regular lessons with students of different age groups and in extracurricular theatre activities. A significant part of the study is planned for critical analysis and understanding of children’s and youth theatre, as they are significant parts of theatre education. Students are provided with special support while creating a research draft and conducting research in theatre pedagogy and children’s theatre, as this type of research is normally based on their theatrical and pedagogical practice. In the first semester, students have one pedagogy course (Theory of education and school) and four basic professional courses: Theatre education – theories and approaches, Theatre creation, Perspectives of children’s theatre and Storytelling and recitation. In the second semester, there is one obligatory course – Drama teaching methods, which completes the thematic area of the study. In both semesters, a large number of ECTS points (4 or 5) and the corresponding time (60 hours in each semester) is planned for practical activities. Practical work 1 course introduces the students to theatre studies, where they are mentored by experienced theatre pedagogues. Within the course Practical work 2, students go to kindergartens and schools and observe classes conducted by experienced theatre pedagogues who are employed in the education system. Within this course, students are also sent to children’s and youth theatres, where they observe the process of creating a play for children. Apart from that, within the courses Practical work 1 and 2, workshops are organized for students in which they gain specific practical knowledge (Writing for theatre, Directing workshop, Theatre and visual arts), develop and expand the knowledge necessary for theatrical and pedagogical practice (Creating a play without a script, Theatrical work with children with disabilities, From script to a theatre play, and Watching a puppet play) and for successful studying (Academic writing). Apart from obligatory courses, students also have elective courses: Psychology of creativity, Collaborative theatre, Approach to a puppet play, Drama script, From practice to research, Philosophy of creation, Performative practices of Boal and Bohm, and Play as a teaching process facilitator. Students are required to take and complete three elective courses. At the end of the study, they write the final specialist thesis, by which they earn 15 ECTS credits. The final specialist thesis is (more frequently) a professional or (rarely) scientific paper in which students show that they have mastered the study programme content and that they have acquired the competences for independent work on the chosen problem. The topic of the final specialist thesis is usually a current and interesting theoretical or practical problem from the professional field.
