The Chair of English Language Teacher Education was established in 2006. The Chair’s instructional activities include delivering the English language component of the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Study Programme in Primary Teacher Education (English Language Track), as well as the English for Primary Teachers courses at the Department of Primary Teacher Education (with modules) and the English for Preschool Teachers courses at the Department of Preschool Teacher Education.
Within the English Language Track of the Primary Teacher Education study programme, students acquire general pedagogical competencies alongside the specific expertise required for early English language instruction throughout the primary school cycle. This programme succeeds the former four-year professional Primary Teacher Education programme, which featured an enhanced track in English Language Teaching and ran from 1997 to 2008. The Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Study Programme welcomed its first students in 2005. The curriculum encompasses language proficiency modules, linguistics, children’s and young adult literature in English, cultural and civilisation studies exploring interculturality and Anglo-Saxon cultures, subject-specific teaching methodology courses paired with teaching practice, and elective courses. Upon graduation, candidates are conferred the professional title of Master of Primary Education, with their specific qualifications for English language teaching explicitly detailed in their Diploma Supplement. The Chair routinely organises guest lectures and workshops led by prominent experts and academics, notably hosting English Teaching Assistants under the Fulbright Fellowship programme in collaboration with the International Relations Office, the Ministry of Science, Education, and Sports, and the US Embassy.
Alongside their pedagogical duties, Chair members actively engage in research and professional activities, both independently and as principal investigators or researchers on scientific projects, and as participants in conferences, symposia, and workshops. Chair members have led or contributed to numerous projects, authoring or co-authoring several research monographs, dictionaries, textbooks, and journal articles, while also serving as editors or editorial board members for various publications.
In 2011, the Chair organised a successful international research symposium, “Early Foreign Language Learning and Teaching”, which drew more than 60 participants. Chair members also regularly present their research at domestic and international conferences, symposia, and congresses, and teach at graduate and postgraduate levels both domestically and internationally.
