Chair of Mathematics and Statistics

Head of the Chair

Deputy Head of the Chair

The Chair of Mathematics and Statistics was established on 13 October 2009, pursuant to a resolution of the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Teacher Education at the University of Zagreb. The Chair’s faculty comprises specialists in the natural sciences (specifically mathematics) and interdisciplinary sciences (mathematics teaching methodology) who contribute to the delivery of degree programmes within the Department of Primary Teacher Education and the Department of Preschool Teacher Education.

Chair members design and deliver modules in mathematics and mathematics education, thereby fostering the development of specialised mathematical and pedagogical-methodological competencies among students at the Faculty of Teacher Education. The pure mathematics courses target the core competencies of primary and preschool teacher candidates, focusing on foundational knowledge, mathematical communication, and problem-solving strategies required for professional practice in schools and preschools. In parallel, the mathematics education courses address the basic principles, strategies, and professional subject-specific methodological competencies required to teach mathematical concepts in primary education, as well as the cultivation of pre-mathematical skills in preschool settings. Beyond undergraduate and graduate instruction, the Chair members contribute to doctoral programmes at the Faculty of Teacher Education and the Faculty of Science at the University of Zagreb, as well as the University of Klagenfurt.

Alongside their teaching responsibilities, members of the Chair actively engage in research and professional activities within mathematics and mathematics education. Their research profile encompasses the management of prominent scientific projects – such as the Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ) project Formal Reasoning and Semantics, led by Associate Professor Tin Perkov, PhD – collaborative participation as research associates in projects funded by the Croatian Science Foundation and other bodies, the publication of papers in peer-reviewed mathematics journals, and attendance at international scientific conferences. Furthermore, Chair members contribute to the wider professional community as speakers at symposia, as editorial board members, as peer reviewers, as authors of professional journal articles, and as creators of mathematical manuals and textbooks. Public engagement initiatives prominently feature the popularisation of mathematics, such as the Mathematical Picture Books project, mathematics competitions, and the joint participation of students and staff of the Faculty of Teacher Education in the Croatian Mathematical Society’s Evening of Mathematics.
