Established in 2006, the Chair of Information and Communication Sciences is one of the larger sub-departmental and organisational units within the Faculty of Teacher Education at the University of Zagreb. Its faculty is drawn from the Department of Primary Teacher Education and the Department of Preschool Teacher Education. The members of the Chair possess multidisciplinary expertise; while predominantly specialising in the social sciences – specifically within the discrete branches of information systems, informatology, and communication studies – a smaller cohort specialises in computer science within the technical sciences, alongside one practising academic painter. The Chair’s teaching activities are structured as follows: primarily within the Department of Primary Teacher Education, delivering the ICT module of the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Study Programme; secondarily within the Department of Preschool Teacher Education; and periodically via the Centre for European Education (a joint venture between the Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb, and the Institute for Educational Sciences at the University of Münster) within the international joint lifelong learning Master’s programme, “Management and Counselling in European Education”. Within the Primary Education track, students acquire core pedagogical competencies alongside specialised proficiency in early years IT and communication studies instruction. Chair members actively engage in research and professional activities, collaborating on team investigations or working independently as principal investigators and researchers on scientific projects. The Chair fosters continuous professional development, with members routinely organising and participating in domestic and international conferences, symposia, and workshops.
Furthermore, several Chair members contribute to the instruction and delivery of the Faculty of Teacher Education’s doctoral programme, “Early Childhood and Compulsory Education”. Notably, several Chair members participated in the international project “Learning for Europe” (TEMPUS III) between 2006 and 2009, and subsequently contributed to the international project “Modernising Teacher Education in a European Perspective” (TEMPUS IV) from 2010 onwards. Members of the Chair have authored or co-authored numerous research monographs, manuals, textbooks, and journal articles, while concurrently serving as editors or on the editorial boards of various scholarly publications. The Chair operates from the central Zagreb headquarters and the regional branches in Petrinja and Čakovec. Across these three geographical locations, the Chair maintains a permanent staff of 10 – seven of whom hold doctoral degrees – supplemented by four external associates. The unit’s internal governance is regulated by an officially adopted rules-of-procedure document.
