Pursuant to the Statute of the Teacher Education Academy of the University of Zagreb, the Academy Council, at its session held on 20 December 2005, adopted a resolution establishing individual chairs. Thus, the Chair of Visual Arts and Media Culture was established. Professor Marijan Jakubin was elected as Head of the Chair.

The Chair convened its inaugural meeting on 31 January 2006.

Following the concurrent establishment of the Chair of Croatian Language and Media Culture, the Faculty Council, on 24 October 2006, resolved to redesignate the Chair of Visual Arts and Media Culture as the Chair of Visual Arts and to transfer the media culture component to the Chair of Croatian Language and Media Culture.

The integration of the Teacher Education Academies in Petrinja and Čakovec into the Faculty of Teacher Education in Zagreb consolidated and expanded the Chair’s operations across these regional branches. On 1 June 2007, the expanded Chair of Visual Arts held its first meeting, attended by all art education faculty members from the Zagreb, Čakovec, and Petrinja branches.

Because music professors at the Faculty of Teacher Education lacked the institutional threshold to establish an independent unit, the Chair of Visual Arts, in coordination with the music education teaching staff, proposed that the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Teacher Education establish a unified, expanded chair. This proposed unit would encompass all art and music education professors to address instructional and staffing issues in these artistic fields. The Faculty Council endorsed this initiative at its session on 22 January 2008, resolving to establish the new Chair of Art and Music Education. Professor Marijan Jakubin was reconfirmed as Head of the Chair. Following this resolution, the newly established Chair held its inaugural meeting on 23 June 2008, to which all full-time art and music education professors from Zagreb, Čakovec, and Petrinja were invited.

Supported by initiatives and endorsements from the entire Faculty Council and the Dean’s Board, the Chair of Art and Music Education manages the Gallery of the Faculty of Teacher Education in Zagreb alongside its regular instructional and artistic activities. The gallery is directed by Professor Danijel Žabčić. Furthermore, the Chair operates the Music Scene under the direction of Senior Lecturer Tomislav Vrandečić, organising a continuous series of art exhibitions and concerts primarily for students and staff.

These activities foster an environment permeated by the visual and performing arts throughout the Faculty of Teacher Education.

Following proposals for a unified primary teacher education curriculum (Program 835) across all modules, the Chair proposed creating an Arts Module to replace the Visual Arts Education module. This integrated module would encompass all artistic fields, including Media Culture (comprising traditional media, multimedia, and media design), Drama Education, and Puppetry. Concurrently, it was proposed that the Chair of Art and Music Education be expanded to encompass these fields under the designation of Chair of Arts. The Faculty Council adopted this proposal at its session on 7 June 2011, officially renaming the Chair of Visual Arts and Music Education to the Chair of Arts. Professor Marijan Jakubin was reappointed as Head of the Chair for a third term, and Branka Bubalo Paliska, Senior Lecturer in Music, was appointed as Deputy Head.
